PACKD™ Deodorization

PACKD™ Deodorization System

PACKD™ Deodorization is an advanced edible oil deodorizer system designed as the final stage of oil refining. In addition to removing odoriferous compounds, free fatty acids (FFA), and other volatile impurities, the PACKD™ system enables enhanced recovery of valuable by-products such as tocopherols, FFA, and PFAD, improving overall refinery economics.
DVC supplies three proven edible oil deodorization plant configurations to suit a wide range of vegetable oils and refinery capacities.

PACKD™ Edible Oil Deodorizer Design

The PACKD™ deodorization plant comprises a high-efficiency packed stripping column integrated with a retention column, specifically engineered for effective deodorization and deacidification of edible oils and specialty fats.
The stripping column is fitted with specially designed structured packing, providing a large surface area for efficient mass transfer between oil and stripping steam under vacuum conditions.

Process Working Principle

Heated oil from the final heater is distributed uniformly at the top of the packed stripping column. The oil flows downward by gravity, spreading as a thin film over the structured packing layers. Stripping steam, introduced through spargers at the bottom of the column, flows counter-currently to the oil. Under high temperature and deep vacuum, volatile components—including odor bodies and free fatty acids—are efficiently stripped and conveyed to the vapor outlet at the top of the column.
The deodorized oil then enters the retention vessel located below the stripping column, where it is held for a minimum retention time of 80 minutes. The retention vessel is equipped with multiple trays, baffles, and continuous sparging steam to ensure complete removal of residual volatiles. Oil flows tray-to-tray via overflow arrangement before passing through regenerative heat exchange with incoming bleached oil, followed by final polishing and cooling.

Key Features of PACKD™ Edible Oil Deodorizer Equipment

  • High mass transfer efficiency due to structured packing design
  • Low stripping steam consumption: ~0.8% for small and medium-capacity deodorization plants. ~0.5–0.6% for large-capacity edible oil refineries
  • Reduced load on vacuum system
  • Minimal thermal degradation and reduced side reactions (polymerization, isomerization)
  • Removable sparge steam tubes for easy maintenance
  • No splash oil formation, ensuring cleaner operation
  • Highly suitable for specialty fats and high-value oils
